This requires different levels of attention depending on the quality of the instrument — the more expensive the flute, the more delicate and time-consuming the adjustments. Procedures vary as follows:
Re-alignment of keywork where necessary. Some shimming of pads to ensure the instrument is airtight. Adjustment of mechanism screws and cork or felts.
Some key realignment. Shimming of pads. Regulation of keywork by screws and/or cork or felt, as required.
Shimming of pads. Adjusting mechanism with cork, felt, paper or leather as appropriate.
How often depends on how the instrument is used and cared for. Regular servicing keeps it in top playing condition and prolongs its life. In addition to everything above, a service includes:
